What is popular culture, and what does it mean to you?
Browne defined popular culture as a “system of attitudes, behavior
patterns, beliefs, customs, and tastes that define the people of any society”.
(2005, p. 3) What this means to me is that popular culture is the way we live
life now, what we like and what is the latest and greatest crave. It is dynamic
and can change the way people act, dress and live.
Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you
in a business environment and in your present and future career?
It is important to understand popular culture so people stay
in touch with the latest and greatest. For a business, it is important to know
what is hot so marketing knows how to grab customers’ attention. It is also
important to know what type of merchandise is selling and how much of it is
needed. In my present career, technology is what drives efficiency and
opportunities. Without knowing the
latest gadgets and gismos it is hard to know how an existing function/process
can be improved.
What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture
artifact? And why would you choose it?
The kindle touch can be considered as a pop culture
artifact. The reason why I choose a kindle touch is because I own one. The
reason why I own it is because it allows me to be able to read books
electronically compared to old fashion paperback. Some of the benefits to this are
that it will never get destroyed, very small and light weight and I can store
thousands of books in it. I can also have it read to me and whenever connected
to the internet with it, try out books (first couple of pages) or even buy them
and be reading it in minutes.
