Assignment 1-2

What is popular culture, and what does it mean to you?

Browne defined popular culture as a “system of attitudes, behavior patterns, beliefs, customs, and tastes that define the people of any society”. (2005, p. 3) What this means to me is that popular culture is the way we live life now, what we like and what is the latest and greatest crave. It is dynamic and can change the way people act, dress and live.

Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you in a business environment and in your present and future career?

It is important to understand popular culture so people stay in touch with the latest and greatest. For a business, it is important to know what is hot so marketing knows how to grab customers’ attention. It is also important to know what type of merchandise is selling and how much of it is needed. In my present career, technology is what drives efficiency and opportunities.  Without knowing the latest gadgets and gismos it is hard to know how an existing function/process can be improved.

What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture artifact? And why would you choose it?

The kindle touch can be considered as a pop culture artifact. The reason why I choose a kindle touch is because I own one. The reason why I own it is because it allows me to be able to read books electronically compared to old fashion paperback. Some of the benefits to this are that it will never get destroyed, very small and light weight and I can store thousands of books in it. I can also have it read to me and whenever connected to the internet with it, try out books (first couple of pages) or even buy them and be reading it in minutes.

  1. Great popular culture artifact! I believe that they are going to be the next "book shelve". It is amazing how many books you can store and read without all of the clutter. It is definitely the future and a huge part of popular culture. I also agree with you that pop culture is everything that we are doing "right now" it's all of our choices and ideas all at once. That's what I think is so great about it! Great post!

  2. Hi Kirk, I can tell you truly enjoy your Kindle because you included a link to save $40 on a Kindle. That was a nice touch. I purchased a Kindle with a small keyboard and it was only black and white a year ago but had to upgraded to a Samsung 10 inch table about five months ago. I was intrigued when I used a coworkers Ipad, I just knew I had to have one. Everyone has their own reasons or better known as one's popular culture. My reason was that it gave me the capabilities to log on to myFranklin.edu. I truly wanted a gadget that was portable, I could download books, read emails and get online. Great Blog and informative.

  3. This is a great artifact.I do not currently own one my self but I am in the process of redecorating my home and one of my biggest problems is what to do with all the books I own. I love books and the Kindle sounds like a great way to get the best of both worlds, the books I love with out them taking up space in my house. Thanks for including the link for $40 savings.

  4. The Kindle is a perfect example of a popular culture artifact Kirk! And you realize this first hand since you actually own one. It is awesome how they have improved technology to the extent of books on a hand held computer like device where you can read as many books as you like. These devices save millions of trees, eliminating the need for printing the books onto paper. They also save space by allowing a large number of books to be located in one place rather than on a huge bookshelf in someones living space.

I agree popular culture changes peoples lives, as long and as much as they let it that is. Popular culture will always be present but some people refuse to follow it as closely.

Great job with your artifact and first blog!
